A Wise and Trusted Professional Friend

Webster’s defines a mentor as “a wise and trusted professional friend; a guide or tutor.”

I define a mentor as someone who understands the value of giving back what she has learned so that others may succeed.

Most people achieve better levels of professional success if they have the guidance and help of a mentor. The mentor serves to nurture and acts as an advocate. She is a sounding board, someone who helps you solve challenges and provides feedback from her experience and success. She usually is better connected and has greater insight into the inner workings of things. She is your cheerleader. She has faith and trust--especially in you. And she shares her experiences willingly.

I discovered several years ago I needed to make a positive difference in other people’s lives. This desire motivates me and fills me with a sense of purpose and wholeness.

I find myself in the role of mentor after years of longing to have a mentor of my own. I knew intuitively that I could achieve more if I had someone to guide me and serve as my cheerleader.

I, like many women of my generation, was not meant to have a mentor. Everything I learned came by way of persistence, perseverance, determination and diligence.

Fortune, however, has been kind and I now find I am able to share with others what I have learned. Fate has placed me where I am today so that I can give back to my community and have a positive influence on women in business.

After six years in a leadership role of a large, active Chamber of Commerce, I was exposed to thousands of businesses and learned what made some more successful than others. Because they lack clarity and focus, 20% of all businesses in the Metropolitan Washington area fail in their first year.

As a mentor, I can share what I’ve learned and help you focus on the specifics that can make the difference between success and failure.
